High in the Chiapas mountains of Mexico, there is a small group of farms that grow some of the best coffee beans in the world. These farmers grow, pick, and dry their coffee beans by hand to create a craft product and support their families and community. Zocalo, in conjunction with Old Soul Coffee Co. here in Sacramento, has committed to working with these farmers to help them create more sustainable processes, improve their quality of life and create a thriving business that stands out. Together, Old Soul and Zocalo partner with these farmers and buy their hand crafted roasts.
Our goal is to boost small businesses in Central and South America, by providing a better life and future for the farmers, their families, and their community. We believe in quality, but even beyond that we believe in changing the world, one coffee farm at a time.
Jason Greist (co-owner of Old Soul Co.) went with a team down to South America to work with these farmers and to hand pick a new roast for Zocalo. Once the beans were brought back to California, they were roasted in small artisan batches to preserve the quality. Here at Zocalo, we brew and serve this specialty roast in our restaurants. Currently being served in is the new “Candido” roast directly from the Mexican state of Guerrero.
